Military Bases Missouri - Fort Leonard Wood is a large military training facility in the heart of Missouri's Ozark region. The nearest cities are Waynesville (Missouri) and St. Robert (Pulaski County, Missouri). Waynesville has a population of 3,507 and is located on historic 66th St. Roberts has a population of 2,760 and is considered the shopping district of the area. Both cities own and operate a regional airport at Fort Leonard Wood, which is the only available airport in the region. Fort Leonard Wood is 63,000 acres and covers an area of 98 square miles. The nearby countryside is ideal for training and offers many rugged acres suitable for field training, but its remoteness has earned Fort Leonard Wood the nickname "The Lost Fort in the Woods of Misery."
The post was built in 1940 and named after the Chief of Staff at the time, General Leonard Wood. It was originally intended to be an infantry training ground during World War II. This changed in a short time to become an engineer training post. Two subsequent base redeployment and closure processes consolidated and moved their training schools to Fort Leonard Wood, and the post became a cadet training center for the chemical unit and the police. The office then became the US Army Maneuver Support Center. In 2009, the Maneuver Support Center was designated a Center of Excellence and the fort became the primary combat training center for most of the Army's non-combat soldiers. In addition to basic training, the position also includes the training of new 2nd lieutenants in the Engineer and Military Police ranks, Phase B of the Basic Officer Course, the NCO Academy, the Warrior Leaders Course and the Advanced Leaders Course. for NCOs of the Ordnance Corps. It's safe to say that Fort Leonard Wood is the Army's training center for almost all military personnel at one point or another in their military careers.

At one point in Fort Leonard Wood's history, the station was a busy rail hub that connected the mail rail system to regular commercial rail. The link still exists, but operations are reduced to just two engines powering 20 sidecars to transport heavy equipment used primarily in training operations.

Postal Housing has 2,100 units available in four distinct neighborhoods. The apartments are available in 2-4 room apartments. Most of the apartments are either new or newly renovated and very attractive. These are privatized apartments and soldiers receive a basic housing allowance based on their rank, which they then pay rent to the company that manages the housing authority. There may be a waiting period for accommodation by post. Apartments and houses for rent are available in the surrounding area.
Pulaski County has seven school districts, all of which have a large percentage of students affiliated with Fort Leonard Wood. Two-thirds of Waynesville's school population consists of Fort Leonard Wood dependents.
